A GOOD DAY THAT ENDS BETTER
A GOOD DAY THAT ENDS BETTER
Sitting outside in a strong Beaufort breeze,
It’s a hot day, but I’m under the trees.
I’m watching my dogs play in the yard,
And I’m working some crosswords, not really so hard.
Chilling out with a beverage or two,
So . . . so . . . so . . . what else is new.
Green grass, blue sky, birds soaring high,
Singing and chirping and fussing . . . no lie.
Flowers, bright colors, with happy new life,
Kept growing and blooming by my wonderful wife.
There’s a new white fence my dog speeds along,
Back and forth to belt out her song.
Out at the canines who walk calm and tame,
Trained well by their owners, while mine gives me shame.
No, not really, there’s really more pride,
For her spirit, her gumption, and her heart, oh so wide.
This is where I am,
For a couple of hours, no cares, not a damn.
But our little chi Magic barks out “Let’s go in,”
“You’re crazy to stay out, as hot as it’s been.”
She craves cooler air, and I acquiesce,
She’s smarter than me, sometimes . . . I confess.
Soon Diamond will stalk me to walk around town,
Some shadier streets, turn here, then let’s go down
To see the boats on the beautiful creek,
And soon we’ll meet creatures with whom we will speak.
She loves the girls, and she loves the men,
But those other dogs . . . oh, my gosh, what a din!
So, then, contritely, we head on back,
To the house, to the porch, we gladly attack
A chair and a quick flop on the nearest stairstep,
It’s clear to me that we’ve lost all our pep.
Inside our home we share a good rest,
Agreeing together “This day was the best!”
And later, some later . . . I seek my next phase,
It’s time for me to come out of my daze.
I’ll have some time with my beautiful love,
A blessing and comfort I’m so thankful of.
My heart is to share with the joy of my life,
Nothing’s more dear than to be with my wife.
